How GreenNest Collective grew search traffic by 540% — without spending a single dollar on ads.

Mission-Driven, Budget-Bound, and Struggling to Be Found

Brand: GreenNest Collective
Founder: Sasha Moreau, environmental justice advocate
Location: Montreal, Canada
Sector: Nonprofit / Sustainability / Community Organizing

Sasha Moreau launched GreenNest Collective with a clear mission: to help marginalized communities turn vacant city land into urban gardens. The team had passion, volunteers, and media mentions, but almost no presence on Google.

“It was disheartening. We’d get featured in local papers, but online? You’d never know we existed.”
— Sasha Moreau, Founder, GreenNest Collective

With zero budget for ads and no in-house technical help, their only option was organic growth, but they had no roadmap to make that happen.

The Challenge: Great Work, No Web Visibility

Lean SEO for Mission-Driven Brands-min

Here’s what we found during our discovery audit:

  • Their site had no metadata, missing H1s, and unindexed pages
  • Most blog posts were buried, untagged, and written without SEO intent
  • No backlink strategy — even their media coverage wasn’t linked properly
  • Broken navigation made it hard for both users and search engines to explore
  • Their mission and work were powerful — but their content didn’t connect

Step 1: Create an SEO Strategy Built for People First

We started by mapping search intent to impact, not traffic. We weren’t chasing viral reach, but aligned, discoverable content that served the mission.

Targeted Keyword Discovery (No Tools, Just Strategy)

We focused on underserved, low-competition terms that aligned with their work:

  • “how to start a community garden in [city]”
  • “urban farming grants Canada”
  • “environmental justice nonprofits Montreal”

We used Google’s People Also Ask box, nonprofit forums, and local Reddit threads to discover what people were actually searching for.

Organized a Lean Content System

  • Created three pillar pages: Community Gardening, Urban Food Systems, and Land Stewardship
  • Rewrote their most passionate stories into keyword-aligned articles
  • Set up a basic internal linking structure using WordPress menus + post tags

Step 2: Turn What They Already Had Into SEO Gold

GreenNest didn’t need to create 50 new blogs. They needed to refocus their existing assets.

We Revamped Existing Posts

  • Added headers, meta descriptions, and alt text
  • Wrote intros that actually answered questions users had
  • Embedded YouTube clips from workshops they’d already done

We Reclaimed Lost Backlinks

We reached out to publications that had mentioned GreenNest but hadn’t linked back.
Over 15 links were added within a week, no outreach automation, just personalized emails.

“We thought backlinks were this huge technical thing. Rankiers just showed us how to ask the right way.”
— Sasha Moreau

Step 3: Train the Team to Run Their Own SEO

We didn’t want GreenNest to be dependent on us. So we built a simple, zero-fluff SEO playbook:

  • 1-page checklist for publishing new blogs
  • Free tools only: Google Search Console, Screaming Frog (lite), and Hemingway Editor
  • Internal training via Loom videos for future volunteers

The Results: A Bigger Footprint, Without a Bigger Budget

In just 90 days, this grassroots nonprofit started ranking and reaching far beyond their local circles:

Monthly organic visits3202,050

Most importantly, their “How to Start a Garden in Your Neighborhood” page now ranks #1 in three provinces.

“This wasn’t just SEO. It gave us a voice — and tools we can use forever.”
— Sasha Moreau
